Changing the way we change diapers

Changing a toddler can be a bit like wrestling an alligator, but it doesn't have to be! Sure, all toddlers have their days of big feelings, but here are some tips to help make diaper changes less stressful!

1. Involve your toddler in the steps-giving them a task like collecting the diaper, wipes, or butt paste are all activities an eager toddler can help with.

2. Use consistency with your language "Okay, we take off your dirty diaper, now we are going to wipe". Explaining the steps consistently will help familiarize your toddler with what to expect, as well as the sequence of the steps which will in turn help with realizing the diaper change will eventually end!

3. Incorporate a simple game or song like patty cake, counting, peek-a-boo, the ABC's, Wheels on the Bus, etc. as this can turn the activity into a fun time and also work as a distraction.

4. If lying down seems to be the culprit, try diaper changes standing up! The mechanics take a bit of getting used to, but often this can be the best trick for a wiggly toddler!

5. Praise them when they start to help you with the task! As they want so badly to be independent at this age, they will remember having successfully helped you, and this will continue to be built into their knowledge of all routines during their day.

Try any one or all of these strategies! What have you found to be helpful with toddler diaper changes?
