Dress-up is a fond activity many of us remember as children, but why? And how does the activity of dressing up promote development for my child?
Dress-up allows for:
Practice donning and doffing real articles of clothing in a pressure-free environment (you will see things like feather boas and a crown in Eloise's trunk, but I love having additional items like cold weather gear (hats, mittens, etc.) to allow for independent practice.
Increases body awareness. As your child attempts to put a hat on their head, use this as a teachable moment "you are so smart, your hat goes on your head!"
Boosts creativity and expression through pretend play-as your child becomes a princess, policeman, ballerina, firefighter, etc. they can transform themselves into a new role, explore far-off lands, and share in their excitement with you!
Encourages communication and sharing-if playing dress up with a sibling or adult, they will likely need help at some point, fostering the need to communicate. In addition, they will likely need to share an article of clothing or accessory, which is great practice for a skill they will need as they go to daycare or school with peers.
Again this activity is a great opportunity to bond as you can certainly join in on the dress up fun-yes, Dads that means you too! :)
This is now a favorite activity of Eloise's. When it comes to dress-up, more is more ;)
